ABA stands for applied behavior analysis which is a scientific approach that utilizes the principles of behavior to improve the quality of life of an individual. In ABA, behavior change is systematic and gradual, and designed for each individual's needs. It is an evidence-based practice which relies of research studies on reducing maladaptive behaviors and increasing replacement behaviors. It is a hands-on approach that requires family participation to obtain better outcomes. ABA is a medically necessary approach that is recommended by pediatricians, neurologist, psychologist to improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities.
BCBA stands for board certified behavior analyst. This professional holds a masters or a doctoral degree and has completed extensive training in behavior analysis. The BCBA is the professional that is responsible for completion of the initial assessment, design of the behavior treatment plan, monitoring and overseeing the progress of your child's progress. I addition, a BCBA supervising the case will meet with the RBT to train, provide support and monitor quality of service and treatment integrity 10% of the hours worked weekly. Caregiver training is also an important role of a BCBA on ongoing basis.
RBT stands for registered behavior technician. The RBT carefully assigned to your child and your family's needs will be responsible for the implementation weekly of the plan designed by the BCBA. Data collection will be recorded during the session while providing behavior analytic services. This certification is offered by the BACB. The RBT is required to work under the supervision of the BCBA.
Every treatment that provides behavior analytic services is designed according to your child's skill deficits and strengths. The hours requested for treatment range from 10 to 30 hours weekly depending on if it's a focused or comprehensive treatment.
The treatment plan designed by the BCBA along with the information obtained by observing your child, interviews with parents/caregivers, completion of standardized assessments, and milestones assessments will be utilized for the development of targets. These targets will be measured by data recording within the session, and display of graphs for each target. In ABA, the focus is behavior change and not specific diagnosis. Clinical decision-making of the treatment effectiveness is made under objective careful visual analysis of the graphs, the collaboration of the caregivers, and providers.
A treatment plan is a detailed document that includes your child's most relevant information such as, background, family values, preferences, results of functional analysis, ABC data, proactive strategies, setting events, antecedent strategies, behavior reduction procedures, target goals to reduce/eliminate and to increase. It includes a fading plan of service and goals mastery criteria. Caregivers have access to the plan to consult when the providers are not with them. At Aprendo Autism Center, we want you to be the best ABA provider for your child.
